ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT POLICY

In2Adventure (Allura Pty Ltd) is committed to maintaining a minimal impact policy that will enable us as individual members of the general public and members of the Adventure Event community to continue to enjoy the vast natural environment that is Australia’s backyard.

For many, forests and parks are places to relax and unwind, away from the pressures of urban life.  Adventure events are our way to escape and challenge ourselves while enjoying the natural beauty of the Australian bush.  It is a privilege to use these areas while pursuing a sport which we love, and to ensure these natural areas continue to be available to us we must take great care in the way we behave and the way we use these areas.

Natural areas protect our water supplies from pollution and form a scenic backdrop to our towns and rural settlements. National parks are our national treasures — the things we want to keep for our children and theirs.

In2Adventure understands that nature provides life-sustaining processes we tend to take for granted:

  • recycling carbon dioxide to release oxygen;
  • creating soils through decomposition;
  • filtering pollutants from the air and water; and
  • storing water.

We cannot live without nature’s ecosystem services.

By working closely with forestry authorities and land managers during event planning, implementing our ‘Bush and Mountain Bike Codes’ and ensuring that all participants at our events adopt these principles, we aim to minimise the impact that our events have on the environment.

We encourage staff, participants and spectators at events to be ambassadors for our sport and tell others about good practice to ensure the longevity of off road sports.  When in State Forests and natural environments, do the right thing.   Help to protect the environment by following these basic rules:

BUSH CODE
  • Keep to tracks.
  • Protect water quality – wash-up at least 50 metres away from streams and avoid using soap (use gritty sand and a scourer instead).
  • Where there is a toilet, please use it. Where toilets are not available, choose a spot at least 100 metres from campsites, streams and tracks, dig a 15cm hole and bury your faecal waste and toilet paper.
  • All native plants and animals are protected. Do not cut down or damage standing trees or vegetation.
  • Take your rubbish home.
  • Where possible, use a lightweight stove for cooking. If you must build a fire, please follow the fire regulations, be conservative in your use of fuel, ensure your fire is safe and ensure your fire is completely extinguished before you leave.
  • Respect Indigenous culture. Rock art and other sites in parks and forests represent thousands of years of living culture with special significance to Indigenous people. These sites are easily damaged and are irreplaceable. Look at them, enjoy them, but please do not touch or damage these sites.
  • Leave pets at home. Domestic animals are not permitted in national parks and aren’t appropriate at events.
  • Leave campsites tidy.
  • Camp at least 20 metres from any stream, lake or reservoir.
MOUNTAIN BIKE CODE
  • Be considerate of others on the road or trail.
  • Pass other users with care and let them know of your presence well in advance with a short friendly greeting. Being startled will upset even the most tolerant walker or horse rider.
  • Always give way to others. Even if it seems inconvenient, being considerate will foster a positive attitude towards adventure racers. Stop and move aside if you encounter walkers or horses.
  • Ride only where permitted, obey all signs and leave gates as you find them.
  • Yield the right of way to those passing or travelling uphill.
  • Ride in control at all times. When riding, be prepared for the unexpected. Timber trucks, 4WD’s, hikers, horse riders and native animals may also be using your chosen track.
  • Stay on the road or on designated mountain bike trials. Do not ride “off-road” or on tracks closed to bikes as we may damage the environment we have come to enjoy.
  • Minimise your impact, when descending, apply enough brake to maintain control, but avoid locking your bike’s wheels and skidding.  Skidding damages tracks by removing the harder surface layer. This can lead to erosion. Cutting corners also causes erosion, so stay to the designated track.
  • When climbing, shift to a gear that provides comfortable forward momentum and maintains traction.
  • Cross streams slowly, at a 90-degree angle to the stream. Walking may be preferable as stream bottoms are often slippery.
  • Stay away from wet muddy areas where possible, as they are very prone to damage. The tracks we leave behind channel the water when it rains and this leads to erosion.
  • Wash your bike tyres before riding in a different area  this will help prevent the spread of disease and unnatural migration of species
  • Wear a helmet, eye protection and other safety gear.
  • Leave no trace of your presence and take all rubbish home.

COVID SAFE

COVID SAFE POLICY STATEMENT

In2Adventure (Allura Pty Ltd) is committed to ensuring that all our events are run safely under the new normal of a COVID-19 environment.

We encourage all staff, volunteers, participants and spectators at events to be ambassadors for our sport and inform others about good practice to ensure the safety of our events.

To help to protect the community and all who attend our events we will be implementing the following basic rules:

  1. Symptoms

No staff member, volunteer, participant or spectator who is experiencing any of the following symptoms are to attend the event site.

Symptoms of COVID-19 can range from mild illness to pneumonia. Some people will recover easily, and others may get very sick very quickly. People with coronavirus may experience symptoms such as:

  • Fever; and
  • respiratory symptoms
    • coughing.
    • sore throat.
    • shortness of breath.

Other symptoms can include runny nose, headache, muscle or joint pains, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, loss of sense of smell, altered sense of taste, loss of appetite and fatigue.

To stop the spread of COVID-19 people with even mild symptoms of respiratory infection are encouraged to get tested and must not attend the event.

  1. How it Spreads

The virus can spread from person to person through:

  • close contact with an infectious person (including in the 48 hours before they had symptoms);
  • contact with droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze; and
  • touching objects or surfaces (like doorknobs or tables) that have droplets from an infected person, and then touching your mouth or face.

COVID-19 is a new disease, so there is no existing immunity in our community. This means that COVID-19 could spread widely and quickly.

If you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive to COVID-19 within the 14 days prior to the event you must ensure that you have been tested and are negative before considering attending the event.

  1. Protect Others and Stop the Spread

We can all help slow the spread of COVID-19 in Australia. To protect others you must:

  • practise good hygiene;
  • practise physical distancing;
  • follow the limits for public gatherings; and
  • understand how to isolate if you need to.
  1. Practice Good Hygiene

This means:

  • wash your hands often with soap and water. This includes before and after eating and after going to the toilet.
  • use alcohol-based hand sanitisers when you can’t use soap and water.
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • clean and disinfect objects you use often such as mobile phones, keys, wallets and work passes.
  • use tap and go instead of cash where possible.
  • No Spitting or clearing of the nose at the event.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow.
  1. Maintain Physical Distancing

Physical distancing at events means people:

  • keep 1.5 metres away from others wherever possible.
  • avoid physical greetings such as handshaking, hugs and kisses.
  • use tap and go instead of cash where possible.
  • stay at home if you have any cold or flu symptoms. Seek medical advice and get tested for COVID-19.
  1. Download COVIDSafe

The COVIDSafe app helps find close contacts of COVID-19 cases. The app helps state and territory health officials to quickly contact people who may have been exposed to COVID-19.

The COVIDSafe app speeds up the current manual process of finding people who have been in close contact with someone with COVID-19. This means you’ll be contacted more quickly if you are at risk. This reduces the chances of you passing on the virus to your family, friends and other people in the community.

State and territory health officials can only access app information if someone tests positive and agrees to the information in their phone being uploaded. The health officials can only use the app information to help alert those who may need to quarantine or get tested.

The COVIDSafe app is the only contact trace app approved by the Australian Government.

Find out more and download the COVIDSafe app here https://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/covidsafe-app

E-BIKE STATEMENT

IN2ADVENTURE E-BIKE STATEMENT

E-BIKES AT COMPETITIVE IN2ADVENTURE EVENTS

We have been approached to consider including an e-bike category in our competitive events.  We have considered this extensively, and spent much time discussing this with many of our participants and considering points of view expressed on numerous forums.

We listened to the opinions, both for and against with valid points on both sides of the debate.  However, after listening to our customers we ultimately had to revert back to our core values and what In2Adventure is really about as an organisation and what we wish to aspire to, and to deliver for our customers.

We believe that our competitive events should encourage and reflect personal achievement and that means completing the event under your own power, driven by your own physical effort, training, determination and personal goals and sharing that experience with others around you who are racing under the same conditions and challenges.

Based on this we have made the decision to NOT permit E-Bikes in our competitive events, and as outlined in the race rules, “All bikes used in the competition must be powered by human power alone”  However, as per the details below participation e-bike events may be introduced.

This does not in any way suggest that we hate e-bikes, or judge anyone who rides one.  They fill a really great need in the mountain biking community.  For those who may be a bit older, or recovering from injury and still wish to enjoy the outdoors on a bike, e-bikes are a fantastic alternative.  We even own an e-bike which we use for course marking.

They can be a lot of fun to ride, however, with regards to a competitive event our athletes have told us, that no matter how the event or starts are structured powered bikes do have an impact on other riders who are riding under their own power, even if the powered bike rider is not competing for a win.

We do try to make every opportunity for riders to take part in our competitive events including:

  • Offering a team option where it is viable;
  • Offering many different course distances to suit all abilities; and
  • Avoiding cut off times at our events and making every effort, where it is safe and practical, to allow athletes to finish the event.

STANDALONE E-BIKE PARTICIPATION EVENTS

Despite not permitting e-bikes in competitive events, we recognise that e-bikes do fill a place in the mountain bike community. For those who may be a bit older, or recovering from injury and still wish to enjoy the outdoors on a bike, or for those who are perhaps trying mountain biking for the first time, e-bikes can be a fantastic alternative.

In2Adventure was built on a key principle of ‘Participation’ and based on this we have made the decision that where practical, a decision may be made to host non-competitive standalone E-Bike participation events in conjunction with existing competitive events.

ABOUT IN2ADVENTURE E-BIKE EVENTS

Where an E-Bike event is hosted it will be:

  1. A standalone event: where E-Bikes do not impact riders taking part in a competitive event under their own power.
  2. A Participation Event: The event will be focused on participation. It will provide an opportunity for those e-bike riders who may not have taken part in a mountain bike event previously, or have had to move to riding an e-bike due to injury or age, to come along and be a part of the event.  Places will not be awarded, however, riders overall times will be published after the event.
  3. Legal motorised bicycles: A bicycle with an electric motor or motors capable of generating no more than 200 watts of power in total, and the motor(s) is pedal-assist only. E-bikes that do not meet the criteria laid down in government rules will not be allowed to take part in events, read the full statement here.
