Athletes can also choose to tackle 2-days of hurt in the dirt at the Qld Dirt Master Challenge where they will compete across 2-days with the aim to record the fastest cumulative time for both events to take home the crown of Dirt Master or Dirt Mistress champion.

The Location

Based on the banks of spectacular Ewen Maddock dam this course offers the very best of the Sunshine Coast hinterland with its stunning waterways, rainforest trails and fern-filled bushland.  The course includes some of the best fast and flowing single track mountain bike trails, and gritty off-road running trails found anywhere in Australia.

The Sunshine Coast MultiSport Festival is supported by the Sunshine Coast Council, and Economy Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray said,

our Sunshine Coast region had long been regarded as one of Australia’s exceptional destinations to host sporting events and we’re delighted to showcase some of our remarkable natural assets like Ewen Maddock Dam for this two-day event.”

SUNSHINE COAST – The Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Festival featured an irresistibly close contest between eventual winner Brodie Gardner and the ultimate challenger Paul Davies.

Gardener, a consistent performer on the Australian off-road circuit, had the gauntlet handed down to him by a first-time mountain bike racer in Davies.

And while the former maintained a lead after each of the five laps of the 47.5km event, the rookie lost no friends, in a performance to savour.

Gardner led Davies after the first lap by a quarter of a second, and then led after the second lap by just over half a second.

The third lap saw Gardener break away to a more than 8-second gap, but then Davies fought back in lap 4, to narrow the deficit to a little under a second.

The conclusion of the fifth and final lap saw a grandstand finish, with Gardner hitting the home straight and Davies trying to chase him up the incline, towards the finish line.

The pursuit was to no ultimate avail, with Gardener hitting the line a mere 3.5 seconds clear of Davies.

It was a battle of technique versus brute force, with subtlety winning out over strength.

“I knew I’d be better technically than Paul, so I just had to maintain consistency, and take my chances when they came,” Gardener said.

While Davies agreed that, “Brodie is a much more experienced rider and could handle the difficult conditions much better than I could. I was just trying to hang on through the technical stuff, and then smash it with pace during the open riding sections.”

Gardener’s winning time was 02:00:01:80, while Davies finished in 02:00:04:44.

Christoper Watters finished third in the Elite Category.

Meanwhile, Gardener’s win gave him the Dirt Master Championship, having won the TreX Cross-Triathlon on the Saturday.

His overall time for the two events combined was 04:18:02.

Simon Nendick finished second in the Dirt Master in a time of 04:55:54, with Matthew Klibbe third, 05:01:17.

In the Women’s 47.5km Mountain Bike event, Connie Silvestri took out Gold, in a time of 02:23:16.

This win also gave Silvestri- like Gardener- the triple honour of winning the Mountain Bike, the Cross Triathlon, and with it, the Dirt Mistress Championship.

Silvestri’s combined Dirt Mistress time was 05:22:56, finishing ahead of Morgan Whiting (05:47:34) and Libby Pennisi (06:05:12)

In the 28.5km Mountain Bike Event, Michael Milne was the fastest male, and Nerida Higgins the fastest female.

And in the 9.5km event, the fastest female was Kayley Moore, and the quickest male was Carter Bell.

The Queensland Government, via Tourism and Events Queensland, is proud to support the Sunshine Coast MultiSport Festival which features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. Your perfect next event is in Queensland where live events combine with the most incredible destinations, and life is beautiful one day, perfect the next.

Two amateur cyclists launch Desert MAN Can at Moreton Bay MTB Series LunarC 8hr Enduro

Brisbane, Queensland:

17th May 2017: For most riders, this year’s overnight LunarC eight-hour mountain bike race was a tough event in its own right, but for Stewart Boswerger and Callie Le Roux it was a very simple training run.

That’s because Stewart, from SLRV Expedition Trucks, and Callie, from Brisbane Truck Centre, announced their intentions to take part in the gruelling Desert MAN Can in August and will cycle across the Simpson Desert.

The aim of Desert MAN Can is to raise money and awareness for beyondblue, which helps people throughout Australia who are suffering from anxiety and depression.

It was a tough ride, but Callie and I worked together and did our best to finish the race,” Stewart said following the LunarC event.

It was a great achievement for us both, especially being amateur cyclists who haven’t participated in such a high endurance cycling event before.”

LunarC is not just any mountain bike race and it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Hosted at Murrenbong Scout Camp, just 40 minutes north of Brisbane, it began at 10pm on Friday 12 May and didn’t finish until 6am the following morning.

It was eight hours of madness and insanity as riders worshipped the night in the Moreton Bay Region.

“We feel even more confident about our trek across the Simpson Desert; a trek that will no doubt be one of the biggest challenges of our lives!”

One of the highlights of LunarC was that organisers kindly allowed the SLRV expedition support truck to be displayed, giving everybody the chance to learn more about Desert MAN Can.

Now with LunarC behind them, all thoughts and preparations are turning to the immense challenge of the Simpson Desert and the need for even more training.

Desert MAN Can is the first expedition to take place under the newly-formed Expedition Mission, a non-profit organisation that hosts an exciting annual expeditions to raise necessary funds for charity.

Already close to $1,000 has been donated by the public to their beyondblue mission through everydayhero.com, but they’re still a long way short of the $10,000 they’re aiming for from the Australian public.

A number of organisations are also offering support to the Desert MAN Can expedition, including Penske, MAN Trucks and Buses, and SLRV Expedition Vehicles.

JMC Academy is also going to join the expedition, with students taking footage of the ride that will be released later this year as a documentary to highlight the cycling pair's selfless act and to further raise awareness of beyondblue.

Callie and Stewart will begin the Desert MAN Can ride in August, supported by a team in MAN 4x4 Trucks converted into SLRV Off-Road Expedition vehicles.

They will follow the French Line across the Simpson Desert on their mountain bikes.

To find out more about their expedition and follow their progress, visit www.expeditionmission.com.au or www.facebook.com/expeditionmission.

Celebrations as the MoreTon Bay MTB Series Kicks Off With a BANG with Handyside & Stone taking Elite Honours

Brisbane, Queensland: South East Qld's newest mountain bike series kicked off on Friday night as riders took a journey to the Dark Side at the LunarC 8hr XC Enduro as part of the MoreTon Bay Mountain Bike Series.  Starting at 10pm on Friday night and finishing at 6am on Saturday the event saw riders from across the country from as far afield as the ACT and Hamilton Island taking on some of the Regions most challenging MTB trails in the aim to complete the most laps of the 9.4km course overnight.

Heralded by a full moon, LunarC started with a bang at the opening ceremony as riders sped off into the night encouraged to 'Ride the Night Away' courtesy of Aussie favourite Jimmy Barnes and a memorable lights display to start the event.

Most riders set out hard before settling into a steady pace with 8 hours of riding ahead of them.  Among the riders were Stewart Boswerger of SLRV Expedition Trucks and Callie Le Roux from Brisbane Truck Centre from team Desert MAN Can who started training in preparation for their cycle across the Simpson Desert in August this year at LunarC.

There were grimaces and smiles throughout the night as solo and team riders tackled the 9.4km course which included a combination of fast flowing single track, fire trails as well as some technical riding on the Mordor, Madness and Moria trails which have become an integral part of the LunarC experience.  Brenden from Bikefix Mobile was on hand at Race HQ ready to assist riders with any mechanicals and expertly kept competitors riding throughout the night.

As daylight drew nearer some riders pushed themselves to reach HQ in the aim to punch out one more lap before the 6am deadline while others welcomed the finish line and headed straight for the magnificent brekky Pizzas  from Alfresco Woodfire Pizza and Australia's best Coffee from Tarryn at Jungle Bean.

It was an amazing night and we would like to pay tribute to some outstanding performances.

The Ultra Lunartics

After all was said and done we discovered who the real Lunartics were on the night with some amazing performances including:

Top Male Riders - Solo
Top Female Riders - Solo
Most Number of Laps on the Night

2017 LunarC 100 Club

And an elite few joined the LunarC 100 Club, pushing out over 100km of riding over the 8 hour period. 2017 members of the 100 Club include:

A big thanks goes out to all riders who competed in the true spirit of the event and kept smiling through the pain while keeping it really friendly and respectful on the course.  This is truly what LunarC is all about.

Full results can be found on line and a huge thank you to Jeff Kingston our volunteer photographer on the night who has made all the action photos available on facebook to download on the links below.  As we wrap up race 1 we look forward to welcoming riders for Race 2 of the series, the Back 2 Back which includes three 20km races across two days as well as junior, and dirt kids events and camping on site.  So grab your mates, grab the family join the excitement of SE Qld's newest MTB experience.

Brisbane, Queensland: Stewart Boswerger of SLRV Expedition Trucks and Callie Le Roux from Brisbane Truck Centre will kick off Desert MAN Can at the newly revived LunarC 8hr cross country mountain bike event. Part of the Moreton Bay MTB Series, LunarC will take place on Friday May 12th from 10pm until 6am. Boswerger sees the LunarC event as the perfect place for Callie and him to start their expedition for the desert trip which aims to raise funds and awareness for Beyond Blue. “It will be a tough ride, but Callie and I will team up and work together to do our best to finish the ride” he says. “If we don’t finish, that’s totally fine, as we are here to prepare ourselves for what will no doubt be one of the biggest challenges of our life”! MORETON BAY—In breaking news, In2Adventure are excited to announce an all new 'Fun Time Teams' category at LunarC 2017.

The 'Fun Time Teams' Category has been introduced in response to customer feedback and will enable teams of up to five riders to take part in LunarC in this non-competitive event. In2Adventure Event Director, Robyn Lazenby told us, "We are always on the look out for new ideas and how we can continue to support our 'Participation' corporate principle. Some of our riders told us that they really wanted to be a part of the unique LunarC Dark Side experience, but didn't feel up to the competition of the three person teams event. This has given birth to the non-competitive 'Fun Time Teams' category. A group of mates can come along and enjoy the Friday Night Party atmosphere of LunarC, do a bit of riding, and have a great time doing it." LunarC is part of the three race MoreTon Bay MTB Series which features events for the entire family and all level of riders. MORETON BAY—In breaking news, In2Adventure, the team who brought you the highly acclaimed Snowies Mountain Bike Festival and the ITU XTri World Championships, is set to launch an all-new Mountain Bike Series in South East Queensland. Hosted in the spectacular Moreton Bay Region, this series is set to explode onto the mountain bike stage in 2017.

Hosted at Murrenbong Scout Camp, just 30 minutes north of Brisbane, the series includes three key events, kicked off by the much-anticipated revival of old favourite - the LunarC 8hr XC MTB Enduro. The series will also see the introduction of some all-new events, including a ‘back to back’ format and weekend stage race for all comers.

Robyn Lazenby, Event Director at In2adventure told us, “The launch of the MoreTon Bay MTB Series is a dream come true for us. To be able to host a three-race series on home soil on spectacular trails that our In2Adventure family know and love is a fantastic opportunity.

We have long known that the Moreton Bay Region, north of Brisbane is a fantastic adventure destination and with the backing of Moreton Bay Regional Council this new series will enable us to showcase the region to athletes from across the state and the nation.”
When asked about the format of the series it seems that riders can expect something a little different, “The series caters for elite riders, weekend warriors and families. With camping and accommodation on site it is really easy to come along and enjoy a weekend of great riding, camping and awesome times with your mates or family.

The three events are uniquely different and the launch of a weekend stage race is something we’ve had in the pipeline for some time.

We wanted to take the fun, excitement and challenge of a stage race and make it accessible to all levels of mountain bikers. We wanted to create a stage event where riders didn’t have to train for months on end to be a part of it. Having said that, the stage race will be a challenge, but it will be achievable with some skills and training.” Simon Lazenby, Race Director told us.

And it seems one of South East Queensland’s most uniquely exciting mountain bike races is set to be revived in 2017 with the relaunch of the LunarC 8hr XC MTB Enduro. “Yes, we have had a LOT of enquiries about when LunarC would be back and after some time off while we focussed on the hosting of the ITU World Championships, LunarC is back!

I am personally so excited that all those Lunartic Mountain Bikers out there will once again be able to indulge their passion for the ‘Dark Side’ and enjoy some night riding madness. LunarC is well known for the unique mountain bike experience it offers and it always includes a few quirky revelations that only a night event of this nature can offer. It is one of our favourite events so stay tuned for some extra surprises in 2017.”

Moreton Bay Regional Council Sport and Recreation Spokesperson Councillor Darren Grimwade said he couldn’t be more excited for the region to host its own Mountain Bike Series and to showcase some of the area’s best MTB trails. “Locals have known for a long time that the Moreton Bay Region is home to some of the most exciting mountain biking in South East Queensland, and to have our own MoreTon Bay Series means we get to share it with the nation’s elite and most passionate riders,” Cr Grimwade said.

“As someone who’s a fan of extreme sports, I can’t wait to for the MoreTon Bay Series to kick into gear!

Cr Grimwade said beyond the fanfare, the MoreTon Bay Series would also inject more than $710,000 into local businesses, cafes, restaurants and accommodation providers.

“We have so much to offer in the Moreton Bay Region from the beaches to the hinterland, and with events like this, it’s an opportunity to share those experiences with visitors from across the state and country.

“It’s exactly the reason why council has invested more than $32.5 million in 2016/17 towards parks, recreation and sport in the Moreton Bay Region.”

Including some of the best MTB trails in the Moreton Bay Region the series is set to challenge elite riders while also offering thrilling events and courses for weekend warriors and families and there’s even some all new events for junior riders and kids as well.

Riders can take part solo or hook up with some mates and share the riding across teams of two or three.
