SNOWY MOUNTAINS, NSW | Former 2-time national XCM champion, Commonwealth Games representative, and winner of the inaugural Snowies MTB Festival in 2015, Andy Blair has won a hard fought battle across five stages to reclaim his Snowy Mountains crown in 2018 while Zoe Cuthbert at just 17 years of age, has taken out the Elite Women’s Crown.

The Snowies Mountain Bike Festival hosted at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa & Thredbo Resort in the iconic Snowy Mountains of New South Wales challenged riders with five stages across three-days with some of the most challenging and diverse riding found anywhere in Australia.

With two stage wins each under their belt it was Andy Blair (The Cyclery- Specialized) and young gun Jayden Ward (Stelf Cycling Team) who came into Stage 5 with everything to race for in the men’s GC.  Ward held a 40sec lead over Blair with Toby Stewart (Phoenix Cycling) in third 6:35 off the pace.  With that scenario it was always going to be a battle of the titans in Stage 5 ‘Release the Cracken Marathon’.  With riders neck and neck on laps 1 and 2, Blair had to dig deep in the final lap to take the stage win in 1:51:34, 1:29 ahead of Ward with Stewart in third.

Catching up with Blair after the race his philosophy as he headed into stage 5 was “Don’t give up til it’s over.   I had 40 secs to find somewhere, I wasn’t super confident but I’ve done enough races to know that anything can happen.  I just put my head down on the last lap and just left it all out there and finished completely empty.”

Blair was “very happy to take out the win.  It was a tough battle with Jayden and Toby that ended up coming down to the last stage so I definitely had to work hard for it but it is all the more satisfying. I’m looking forward to coming back again next year.”

In the female GC race Peta Mullens (Focus Attaquer) came into the race carrying a heavy cold and heading into stage 5 it was anybody’s title with Zoe Cuthbert (Trek Shimano Australia) and Mullens each having two stage wins under their belt.  There was just 4 seconds separating the two and Swiss legend Renata Bucher (Aloha Racing) was not far behind in third.  Bucher demonstrated some of the hard grit and determination that she is famous for in stage 5 and pulled back a mighty win, 5 seconds ahead of Cuthbert.  Despite the second place, Cuthbert’s time of 2:07:57, which was 11 seconds ahead of closest rival Mullens, was enough to hold onto the overall win in the GC with a lead of 15 seconds.

“Being my first elite win, winning this race has had a pretty amazing feeling.”  said Cuthbert.

“Each stage held an exciting race with awesome riders that pushed me to my limit, but were very encouraging at the same time. The courses were always a balance between fun and challenging and out on track I had amazing support from spectators, fellow riders, volunteers and race organisers.

Between each stage everyone was just as supportive, sharing tales from out on course, giving me tips for the next stage and encouraging me to try my hardest. ‘In2adventure put on a great race (once again) and I look forward to race again next year!”

Cuthbert topped general classification (GC) 15 seconds over her nearest rival – road, mtb and cx superstar Mullens – who’s focus has been on the tarmac this year with Swiss legend Bucher finishing third edging out Briony Mattocks (Cyclery Northside) only on the final stage.

After the race Mullens, racing for the first time at the Snowies MTB Festival, said that “I might just have found a new favourite cross country stage race.  [this is] a race I’ll just HAVE to bring my Focus Attaquer CX Team to next year.”

She went on to add, “finally a stage race that offers more descending than climbing, an extra 6km thanks to a serene chairlift ride it offers achievable climbs, flowing descents and endless single track that I fell in love with even in my current state of health.”

This year’s race featured an Alpine start line at 1,260 metres in elevation, as well just under 100 kilometres of rugged mountain terrain, technical single track, monstrous ascents, daring descents and, of course, a $5,000 cash prize pool.

Elite and amateur riders alike faced a barrage of mountain biking disciplines, including a 5.5km time trial, 19.5km Thredbo Summit Smash, 5.8km Thredbo All Mountain Descent, the 18.5k Gravity Check and 45k Release The Cracken marathon.

One of the event hubs, Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa offered competitors and spectators use of the resort with properties from studios to three bedroom apartments covering all budgets and tastes. And the other, Thredbo Resort also has a wide range of accommodation and activities, giving visitors a perfect base to explore this spectacular part of NSW.

The Snowies Mountain Bike Festival is proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW.

SNOWY MOUNTAINS – In2Adventure have announced the launch of what is arguably one of the nation’s most exciting and challenging trail run events held in the rugged mountain terrain of Australia’s iconic Snowy Mountains.

The Snowies Ultra Trail Run Festival, will be held in conjunction with TreX, Australia’s national cross triathlon series which includes seven events across the nation, and will include a 50k Ultra Trail Run, half marathon, 12k and 5k events.

Based in the heart of the Snowy Mountains the event showcases the regions spectacular Thredbo Valley and takes in the very best the region has to offer including the rugged mountain terrain that traverses the Thredbo and Little Thredbo Rivers.

The event is hosted by In2Adventure and will be based at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa, the winning combination that was successful in bringing ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships to the Snowy Mountains in 2016.  In2Adventure have been hosting specialist off road and adventure events throughout Australia for over ten years and Race Director Simon Lazenby sees the launch of this new trail run festival in the Snowy Mountains as “an eagerly anticipation addition to the wide array of off road events already hosted in the Snowies region.”

The Snowy Mountain have established a reputation as ‘Australia’s Adventure Playground’ over the past five years with summer visitation rising as mountain bikers, trail runners and multisport athletes flock to the region.  This has been encouraged with the hosting of events including the World, Oceania and Australian cross triathlon championships, The Australian aquathlon championships and the widely acclaimed Snowies Mountain Bike Festival.

Anthony Cleary, General Manager of Lake Crackenback Resort which will host the event told us that;

“Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa is extremely excited to welcome the new Snowies Trail Run Festival to the Snowies region. We are proud to partner with fantastic operators such as In2Adventure to host these events and showcase the Snowy Mountains region to new and returning visitors.

The Trail Run Festival is well suited to the beautiful surrounds of the Resort, with a lot of challenging terrain to navigate. The excitement and hype of the weekend will be exhilarating, with the Australian Cross Triathlon on the same weekend. We look forward to welcoming all competitors, support crew, family, friends and spectators to the Resort to what is sure to be a great weekend.

The Snowies Ultra Trail Run Festival will take place on Sunday 25th February, 2018. It will follow the TreX Cross Triathlon on Saturday 24th, which includes the Australian National Championships and World Champs Qualification events for both Cross Triathlon and Aquathlon.

The course will also hold some special experiences for athletes as Event Director Robyn Lazenby told us,

“The rugged mountain terrain, the history of the mountain men, the challenging altitude, the spectacular scenery plus all the luxury of a 4.5 star resort combine to make this the perfect location for a world class trail running festival.

We look forward to welcoming the many competitors and friends and family from across Australia and the world who will be joining us in Australia’s Premier Adventure Playground.”

When asked more about what the course will offer to Australia’s trail running enthusiasts Robyn added,

“Starting at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa the course follows the beautiful Thredbo Valley Trail (TVT) which undulates and climbs the spectacular Thredbo Valley alongside the Thredbo River within Australia’s iconic Kosciuszko National Park.

Starting at an altitude of 1260m and with an elevation change of 530m, runners will be tested with over 50k of rugged terrain, technical single track, a mammoth ascent, and awe inspiring downhills.”

October 10, 2017
In breaking news TreX, Australia’s National XTri Series, have announced the launch of an all new event for TreX Goldfields and TreX Snowy Mountains with the introduction of the TreX Aquathlon.

In2Adventure have announced the launch of an all new event for the TreX series with an Aquathlon to be hosted at the Bendigo and Snowy Mountains MultiSport Festivals this season.  These events also double as world championship qualification rounds as well as the Australian National Championship in the Snowy Mountains.

The move sees the series aligning with the strategic direction of the International Triathlon Union, the governing body for triathlon world wide which this year hosted the MultiSport World Championship Festival in Canada combining the cross triathlon world championships with its multisport counterparts including duathlon, aquathlon, long distance and aquabike.

The event is hosted by In2Adventure, the team who brought the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships to Australia in 2016 and have been hosting specialist off road and adventure events throughout Australia for over ten years, however, if our readers are anything like us they question they’re asking is, ‘What is an Aquathlon?’  We put this to Race Director Simon Lazenby.

“Quite simply it’s a Run, Swim, Run.  Aquathlon is a great way to get into the sport of triathlon.  It doesn’t require a road or mountain bike, all you need are a pair of togs and a pair of running shoes, so it’s a great way for anyone to come along and try sport, especially our young champions of tomorrow.”

The aquathlon events in both Bendigo and Snowy Mountains include a Standard, Sprint, Junior, Teaser and Dirt Kids Courses which offer an opportunity for all ages and all abilities to be a part of the action.

The organisers also added that the addition of the TreX Aquathlon adds a new dimension to the ever popular Dirt Master Challenge that is an integral part of the Bendigo and Snowy Mountains MultiSport Weekend.

Dirt Master contenders tackle three hardcore multisport events across two days with the aim to take out the ultimate title of Dirt Master or Dirt Mistress.   This year that will include the TreX Cross Triathlon on Saturday morning, the Aquathlon on Saturday afternoon and Trail Run Festival on Sunday.

Proudly supported by the City of Greater Bendigo, the Goldfields MultiSport Festival will take place on Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th November. Event Director Robyn Lazenby told us that

“Bendigo is often seen as a contemporary regional centre, however, what most people don’t realise is that it is a real hidden treasure when it comes to action packed multisport events. Crusoe Reservoir provides the perfect backdrop for a challenging off road swim, mountain bike and trail run for the TreX cross tri, plus the on road trails for an aquathlon; and then a spectacular trail run festival course, all in the one stunning location.

The same can be said of Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa in the Snowy Mountains.  Not only does it offer world class mountain biking and trail running facilities it also has the capacity to host a great on road aquathlon course as well.”

Entries for the TreX Aquathlon events open today and full information and entry details can be found on the website at:

In breaking news Bendigo Gold-fields will host an all new trail running festival in conjunction with the national TreX Cross Triathlon Series.

BENDIGO – In2Adventure have announced the launch of what is described as a trail run festival that is set to challenge and inspire Australia’s trail running fraternity hosted in Victoria’s historic goldfields region.

The Bendigo Trail Run Festival, will be hosted in conjunction with TreX, Australia’s national cross triathlon series which includes seven events across the nation.  The Victorian round of the series will play host to the Victorian state cross triathlon championships and the aquathlon world championship qualifier.

The event is hosted by In2Adventure, the team who brought the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships to Australia in 2016 and have been hosting specialist off road and adventure events throughout Australia for over ten years.  Race Director Simon Lazenby sees the launch of this new trail run festival in Bendigo as “a significant and exciting addition to an action-packed calendar of off road trail events in 2017/18.”

Bendigo is a vibrant contemporary regional centre, boasting beautiful streets created from one of the world’s greatest gold rushes, however, the town also has a few more hidden treasures which the Bendigo Trail Run Festival is set to showcase.

Crusoe Reservoir and Bendigo Regional Park are not only idyllic locations for an expansive open water swim alongside thrilling mountain bike trails, but it also offers up an eclectic mix of trails and terrain set to delight Australia’s trail running fraternity.

Proudly supported by the City of Greater Bendigo, the Bendigo Trail Run Festival will take place on Sunday 26th November following the TreX Cross Triathlon Festival on Saturday 25th. It offers a selection of courses including half marathon, 11k and 5k distances along with a free Kids Mud Rats run.

The course will also hold some special experiences for athletes as Event Director Robyn Lazenby told us,

“Bendigo is often seen as a contemporary regional centre, however, what most people don’t realise is that it is a real hidden treasure when it comes to action packed activities such as open water swimming, mountain biking and trail running.  The launch of the Bendigo Trail Running Festival has been on the cards ever since we discovered this spectacular area a few years ago.

She went on to add,

The team at Crusoe Reservoir have really supported us in creating a true ‘Off Road’ experience for our trail running fraternity with a course that includes bushland trails, undulating cross country terrain, rocky gullies, challenging climbs and descents, scenic vistas and historic water courses.

The feedback from our TreX athletes after experiencing the new trail run course last season was that it was one of the best in the series due to its true off road nature, so we look forward to showcasing this to a dedicated trail runners.”

The Bendigo Trail Run Festival is launched off the back of the highly successful Tomaree Trail Run Festival launched earlier this month in Port Stephens to rave reviews and the weekend schedule will offer the same wide range of events for all ages and abilities including the trail run half marathon, 11k, 6k and Kids Mud Rats along with the Standard, Sprint, Junior, Teaser and Dirt Kids triathlon events plus a duathlon and aquabike and Aquathlon festival on Saturday afternoon.

One Day Entry Special | First 50 Entries pay only $30!

Entries open at 9am (AEST) on Tuesday 3rd October with an extra special ‘One Day Only Entry Offer’ to launch this exciting new trail run festival.  Be one of the first 50 entries on Tuesday 3rd July and enter the Bendigo Half Marathon for just $30! Port Stephens shines with “Miles of Smiles” as Alexander & Daniel take line honours at the Inaugural Tomaree Trail Run Festival and Kay & Flett claim Dirt Master & Dirt Mistress Titles

PORT STEPHENS | As over 450 athletes and 1000 visitors from across Australia descended on Port Stephens last weekend, day two of the ‘Off Road’ extravaganza saw Port Stephens turn on a spectacular day and a course that included “Miles of Smiles” at the Inaugural Tomaree Trail Run Festival.

2017 saw the launch of the TreX Cross Triathlon Series in Port Stephens coupled with the all new Tomaree Trail Run Festival which included a half marathon, 11.5k and 6k courses which both challenged and delighted runners from across Australia.

At the end of the day it was local, Alexander James from Salamander Bay and representing the local trail running group Tomaree Trotters who took out line honours for the males in a blistering time of 1:26:23. While Amy Daniel from Emu Plains in NSW representing Upcoaching took the win for the females in a time of 1:53:01.

Simon Lazenby, Race Director from In2Adventure, the national event team who brought the festival to Port Stephens made special mention of the remarkable times clocked by these young runners on what was a technically challenging and diverse course,

These times really reflect the talent of these runners as this was not a course for those who weren’t up for a challenge” he remarked.

The course which took runners into some of the most awe inspiring coastal terrain found anywhere in the world and included the beauty of Tomaree National Park, which at this time of year was abundant with wild flowers; the challenge of a climb across Samurai Dunes; and the stunning beauty of Port Stephens Coastal Trails rewarded runners with views and vistas that, just for a while helped to quiet the sound of legs challenged by the rocky, sandy, rough and challenging off road trails.

The run finished with a rocky climb around the Fingal Bay headland before a beach run along spectacular Fingal Bay to a raucous welcome from the crowd who had gathered on the Fingal Bay foreshore to welcome runners at the finish line.

The event also saw the launch of the Port Stephens Dirt Master & Dirt Mistress Titles where brave souls chose to tackle the TreX Standard Course on Saturday including a 1500m swim, 30km XC MTB and 10k Trail Run and then back up on Sunday to take on the Tomaree Trail Run Half Marathon.

At the conclusion of the weekend seven athletes completed the challenge to take home the title of Dirt Master or Dirt Mistress and it was Sorcha Flett from Black Forest in South Australia with a cumulative time of 5:57:14 taking out the Dirt Mistress Port Stephens title and Luke Kay from Dickson in the ACT in a time of 4:35:45 taking out the Dirt Master title.

Newly crowned Dirt Master & Dirt Mistress Title Holders include:

  • Luke Johnston | Redlynch, Qld
  • Simon Nendick | North Lakes, Qld
  • Tony Williams | Mount Victoria, NSW
  • Stuart Lowrie | Fingal Bay, NSW
  • Nathan Archer | Fern Bay, NSW

The feedback from those who took part has been overwhelming and the “Miles of Smiles” seen out on the trails around Port Stephens this weekend truly reflected that sentiment.  But the question on everyone’s lips was, will the event be back again next year?

If we have a say in it this will become a regular annual event.” Event Director Robyn Lazenby told us.

The community in Port Stephens have been overwhelmingly welcoming and the assistance provided by local groups such as the Fingal Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, the Tomaree Trotters and Park Run has really added to the success of the event. As well as the support of local businesses such as the Fingal Bay Holiday Park, Port Stephens 4WD, Murrays Brewery, Quad Bike King and Capture Imaging Photography have really made this event a special experience for us and our team as well as competitors who travelled from wide and far from across Australia.

We cannot thank everyone enough and would truly welcome the opportunity to continue to grow this event into the future.”  She concluded

The national TreX series and MultiSport Festivals continues on their national tour with round 3, TreX Redlands, hosted at Queensland’s mountain biking heaven, Karingal Scout Camp at Mount Cotton on Brisbane’s south side before heading onto Bendigo in November with the launch of the Bendigo Trail Run Festival.

Based on some feedback Saturday’s timetable has been updated slightly to reduce the time between stage 1 and stage 2.  All times after 9am have been brought forward by one hour.  This means the Dirt Kids event will be at around 11am and check in for stage 2 will start at midday.

You can view the updated timetable online here https://in2adventure.com.au/events/moreton-bay-mtb-series-back-stage-triple/#timetable

And the athletes guide has been updated which you can download here https://in2adventure.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/2017_Athletes_Guide_Moreton_Bay_MTB_Back_Stage_Triple_v2.pdf

Thanks so much and we look forward to seeing you all tomorrow morning or tonight if you’re camping for the weekend.

Best wishes

PORT STEPHENS – One Day Entries for the newly launched Tomaree Trail Run Festival sold out this morning in 10 minutes and as the morning continues the event is filling fast.

The Tomaree Trail Run Festival, named after the national park in which the event is based, will be hosted in conjunction with TreX, Australia’s national cross triathlon series which includes seven events across the nation this season.

Based on the NSW Mid north coast and just 2.5hrs drive from Sydney, Port Stephens offers a winning combination of beaches, national parklands and rugged coastlines.  The location offers the perfect backdrop for the action packed Tomaree Trail Run Festival and TreX Series which takes the traditional form of triathlon and then heads ‘Off Road’ with a thrilling mix of swimming, mountain biking and trail running.

Proudly supported by the Port Stephens Council, the Tomaree Trail Run Festival will take place on Sunday 17th September following the TreX Cross Triathon Festival on Saturday 16th. In breaking news Port Stephens will host an all new trail running festival in conjunction with the national TreX Cross Triathlon Series.

PORT STEPHENS – In2Adventure have announced the launch of what is described as a trail run festival that is set to delight, challenge and inspire Australia’s trail running fraternity hosted in what is arguably one of Australia’s most iconic and picturesque destinations.

The event is hosted by In2Adventure, the team who brought the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships to Australia in 2016 and have been hosting specialist off road and adventure events throughout Australia for over ten years.  Race Director Simon Lazenby sees the launch of this new trail run festival in Port Stephens as “a significant and exciting addition to an action-packed calendar of off road trail events in 2017/18.”

Proudly supported by the Port Stephens Council, the Tomaree Trail Run Festival will take place on Sunday 17th September following the TreX Cross Triathon Festival on Saturday 16th. It  offers a selection of courses including half marathon, 11.5k and 6k distances along with a free Kids Mud Rats run.

The course will also hold some special experiences for athletes as Event Director Robyn Lazenby told us,

“Port Stephens is one of Australia’s natural hidden treasures with its spectacular coastline, beaches, and the beauty of Tomaree National Park.  The location represents the perfect setting for a trail running festival as it will challenge participants with a course that includes some of the most diverse and eclectic mix of trails and terrain found anywhere in Australia.”

When asked more about what the course will offer to Australia’s trail running enthusiasts Robyn added,

“The courses start at Race HQ based in beautiful Fingal Bay and will challenge runners with a diverse array of terrain and scenery, from the beauty of Tomaree National Park, to the expansive coastal views from the Tomaree coastal trail, to the challenge of the Samurai Dunes plus a rocky coastal section and then a short run along the awe inspiring white sandy beaches of Fingal Bay.

You might even see one of the many migrating Humpback or Southern Right Whales, or a friendly school of dolphins along the way, like we did earlier this year.”

The course has been designed for runners to experience an eclectic mix of diverse terrain, and physical challenge while having the opportunity to experience some of the most beautiful scenery in Australia in the one spectacular and iconic location.  We can’t wait to welcome athletes from across Australia to share this with us.”

The weekend schedule offers a wide range of events for all ages and abilities including the trail run half marathon, 11.5k, 6k and Kids Mud Rats along with the Standard, Sprint, Junior, Teaser and Dirt Kids triathlon events plus a duathlon and aquabike.
